CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) — A city-owned, quasi-public detention center run by a private company in Central Falls is unsure where it stands following a recent decision by the U.S. Department of Justice.
The Justice Department made the decision to phase out the country’s private prisons this week, leaving the future of the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in jeopardy.
The facility is filled by inmates who come in from contracts the Central Falls Federal Detention Facility Corporation secures with law enforcement agencies such as the U.S. Marshals Service. Many of the detainees are sent to Wyatt while awaiting trial.
Board chairman Luke Gallant says Wyatt has not received word from the justice department outlining any plans to reduce detainee population in private correctional centers.
