NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island regulators have approved a plan to rebuild an old seawall along a South Kingstown beach.
The Providence Journal reports that the Coastal Resources Management Council on Tuesday voted in favor of the plan at a meeting at the University of Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay campus.
The plan by Kevin Finnegan, the owner of the Ocean Mist, aims to protect a portion of Mary Carpenter Beach from erosion.
Town officials and Finnegan had disagreed over the town’s plan to build a sheet-pile wall. Finnegan argued it would hasten erosion in front of his business.
The town eventually agreed to let Finnegan rebuild the stone wall on the town-owned beach. Finnegan will pay the $2.5 million cost.
