PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — At least four firefighters are being treated for cyanide poisoning after battling a fire near Providence College.
WJAR-TV reports that 21 firefighters were injured after being called to Eaton Street on Thursday evening to fight flames that had spread through a three-story home and to neighboring buildings.
Fire Capt. Joseph Fontaine had been in critical condition but is now reportedly stable. He was taken to Roger Williams Medical Center in serious condition and transferred to Rhode Island Hospital.
Fontaine was among the four treated for cyanide poisoning, which can result from smoke inhalation.
Other firefighters suffered burns and skeletal injuries. None of the injuries was considered life-threatening.
A Providence College spokeswoman told WPRI-TV that 19 students from the university were displaced as a result of the fire.
