PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Former Providence Mayor and WPRO host Buddy Cianci will be remembered at his funeral by another former mayor who was also once his bitter political rival.
Joe Paolino was Providence’s mayor from 1984 to 1990. There will be no eulogy at Cianci’s funeral Monday at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, but Cianci’s nephew says Paolino will deliver words of remembrance.
Paolino replaced Cianci as mayor when he was forced to resign in 1984 after pleading no contest to assault. Cianci then replaced Paolino as mayor when Paolino ran for governor in 1990.
The men later became close.
Others scheduled to speak and do readings Monday include Cianci’s fiancee, Tara Marie Haywood, his longtime friend and former city solicitor Charles Mansolillo, and two of his nephews.
