PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island State Police have released for the first time background investigations into prospective state judges.
The Providence Journal reported Wednesday the investigations into the five candidates running for the District Court vacancy were released in response to a public records request.
The police investigation includes verifying educational and professional backgrounds and examining any criminal history.
The investigation found that one candidate, former state Rep. Timothy Williamson, was issued a summons for a 2014 hit-and-run with an unattended vehicle. Williamson told police during an interview he’d been arrested in 1983 for breach of peace and in 1985 for larceny for throwing a hot dog vendor’s tip cup.
Williamson began working in 2014 as part-time attorney for the House Judiciary Committee.
The other candidates had no arrest records.
