NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island council member has been asked to step down over an online comment about a box of chocolates.
WJAR-TV reports North Smithfield Councilwoman Roseanne Nadeau wrote in the comments section of a news site that voters should complain about town officials accepting “bribes.”
Nadeau said during a council meeting Tuesday she was referring to a box of chocolate-covered strawberries that some residents gave a council member. She says she was relaying concerns some residents had.
Council Vice President Paul Zwolenski accused Nadeau of taking “the largest box of chocolates.”
Council members say Nadeau should’ve alerted authorities if she had concerns. They voted 3-2 for Nadeau to step down but it wasn’t enough to pass.
Nadeau says she’ll to take her concerns to the state ethics commission.
