WEST WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island law enforcement officials and leaders of the Muslim community are holding an open dialogue forum at the Islamic School of Rhode Island.
They say the Monday evening event is prompted by recent anti-Muslim sentiment, the terror attack in San Bernardino, California, and fears among law-abiding members of the Muslim community.
Law enforcement officials note they have been working with the Muslim community for years, but in the current state of affairs it is critical to work together to condemn the California attack and try to prevent potential hate crimes.
Among those planning to participate are State Police Col. Steven O’Donnell, Islamic School Principal Abdelnasser Hussein and U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha.
The West Warwick private school serves pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. It was vandalized with offensive graffiti earlier this year.
