PROVIDENCE (AP) — Authorities are investigating how a Providence’s website was hacked.
WPRI-TV reports that someone accessed Providence’s website late on Saturday and left a message claiming credit for the hacking.
The hacker’s message was posted publicly and offered to sell sensitive data, leaving behind a pseudonym and an email address.
A spokesman for the mayor’s office told WPRI that the incursion was limited only to public portions of the website, and that there’s no indication the city’s back-end database was compromised.
The hacker’s note remained on the city’s website for several hours, but by Sunday afternoon the website had been returned to normal.
City and state police are investigating the hacking.
