PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence teachers have agreed to a new contract that will provide periodic raises for educators over the next three years and now boasts language regarding seniority when considering potential layoffs.
The contract calls for a 1 percent raise for the current school year, a 1.75 percent increase at the beginning of next year and a 1.5 percent salary boost on the final day of the 2016-17 academic year.
Mayor Jorge Elorza tells The Providence Journal that the contract, which runs through 2016-2017, also increases decision-making at the school level by providing more autonomy.
Providence Teachers Union President Maribeth Calabro says she’s pleased with the outcome and is glad to put this issue to rest.
The contract was ratified by Providence City Council and signed by Elorza on Nov. 19.
