CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — Cranston police have arrested the former boyfriend of a pregnant woman found dead in her burning apartment last week.
Police chief Col. Michael Winquist says 29-year-old Born Smith of Providence is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday on charges including murder and arson in the Friday death of Aliss Collins.
Collins was found by firefighters inside a third-floor apartment of the burning house. The 32-year-old woman was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The unborn baby did not survive.
The medical examiner determined that Collins had been beaten and the cause of death was described as blunt force trauma and smoke inhalation.
Police say Smith and Collins had been “intimate partners” for 10 months.
It’s unclear if Smith has a lawyer who can comment on the charges.
