PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority is asking for public comment on possible changes that could increase fares for some riders and reduce them for others.
WPRI-TV reports that meetings are being held this week in several communities.
RIPTA is considering whether to eliminate free passes for people with low incomes aged 65 or older and people with certain disabilities. The station reports that under a proposal, those over 65 and those with certain disabilities would instead ride at half fare. Incomes would not be considered.
The Senior Agenda Coalition of Rhode Island estimates more than 13,000 low-income and disabled riders will lose free passes. It says they can’t afford half fare.
RIPTA board chairman Scott Avedisian says sometimes nearly half of riders are doing so for free, and it’s not sustainable.
