If the Fall River Chamber of Commerce has its way, the neighboring Massachusetts city could be next candidate make a pitch for the Pawtucket Red Sox.
The Fall River Herald reports Chamber of Commerce CEO Robert Mellion has been floating the idea of a Fall River AAA baseball franchise to other members of the chamber board and members of the local legislature.
The news comes after Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo expressed concern about the PawSox leaving Rhode Island and a month after the Massachusetts’s second largest city Worcester began speaking with the team.
Proponents say Fall River is a prime contender given its proximity to the highway and parking space availability.
A representative for the Pawtucket Red Sox told WPRO in a statement that “The club will now devote its energy to preparing for the 2016 season in Pawtucket at McCoy Stadium, and will continue to listen to ideas and plans brought to us regarding the long-term future of the franchise.”
Mellion told the paper the effort to bring the PawSox to the city is still in its infancy.
