Several environmentalists say a proposed solar farm in Cranston flies in the face of a city plan that calls for the preservation of open space and agricultural land.
Three members of the nonprofit West Bay Land Trust complained about the proposal to the city council on Thursday. The Providence Journal reports the site sits on more than 300 acres of open space guarded by the trust.
Mayor Allan Fung’s administration has proposed a change in the zoning ordinance that would make solar developments an allowed use in certain residential, open space and manufacturing zones. That would help clear the way for the $10 million solar project.
The Plan Commission endorsed Fung’s proposed ordinance amendments.
