Several Brown University professors have expressed concern about free expression at the Ivy League school after the administration criticized the student newspaper for publishing columns its editors later deemed racist.
Brown President Christina Paxson, Provost Richard Locke and Executive Vice President Russell Carey said The Brown Daily Herald “caused harm” and “did not live up to the expectations of the Brown community” when it published a student’s columns last week.
Editors later decided the columns were racist and apologized.
In a letter Thursday, five faculty members said the administration has failed to stand up for free expression, which they term the core value and soul of the university. They say the administration’s position means they want the student editors to suppress opinion pieces that could be offensive.
