Johnston has passed a law to recoup the money it’s spending to educate students from neighboring communities who illegally enroll in the town’s schools.
Under the law, Johnston can bill homeowners who allow their address to be used by out-of-town students.
The homeowners would be responsible for the cost of educating those students, currently about $14,000 annually.
The town council passed the ordinance Tuesday.
Mayor Joseph Polisena says it will save the town hundreds of thousands of dollars in the future by preventing homeowners from allowing their addresses to be used.
It takes effect immediately.
Officials can put a lien on a property if the owner doesn’t pay and permanently revoke property tax exemptions.
