Dozens of local supporters of Planned Parenthood gathered on the front steps of the State House Tuesday in a show of solidarity with the organization after weeks of controversy.
The family planning organization has been the center of discussion in congress as a caucus of the GOP threatens to shut down the federal government over the release of videos showing Planned Parenthood employees discussing the sale fetal material.
Providence resident Jessan Dunotis said she helped plan the demonstration to honor the legacy of Planned Parenthood as a champion of reproductive rights.
“I stand here in testimony of the women and men who allowed Planned Parenthood to be in its present state today,” said Dunotis.
She said many before her have been ostracized for supporting Planned Parenthood, and that today’s controversies are distractions.
“What is the broo-haha? Except scare tactics and terror films,” said Dunotis referencing the undercover videos.
A bill is making its way through the US Senate to fund Planned Parenthood and avoid a shutdown.
