U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse says the recent revelations in the lawsuit over the state’s failed $75 million deal with Curt Schilling’s video game company remind him of secrets and scandals of the past.
“It has a little bit the odor of old Rhode Island,” said Whitehouse.
Documents released last week in the 38 Studios lawsuit revealed questionable behind-the-scenes maneuvering by key players, such as former House Speaker Gordon Fox and former Gov. Donald Carcieri.
Whitehouse prosecuted corruption cases as Rhode Island’s U.S. attorney, then attorney general.
The Democratic senator said Monday some of the 38 Studios details have “the odor of old Rhode Island.”
Whitehouse wouldn’t say whether he thinks anyone should be charged criminally. A criminal investigation remains open.
Whitehouse says 38 Studios is “a tragic what might’ve been.”
He says 150 Rhode Island businesses could have used $500,000 each to grow.
