A Cranston mother is demanding action from the school district and Edgewood Highlands Elementary School after her 2nd grade son was allegedly punched in the stomach during recess.
Megan Fiske’s demands made rounds on social media after she posted a picture of her 8-year-old son Ryder holding a sign which reads “I was bullied at Edgewood Highlands in Cranston R.I. and no action has been taken please share.”
Fiske told WPRO’s John DePetro that she learned of the incident when her husband picked up Ryder from school Tuesday afternoon.
“The first words out of my son’s mouth were, ‘I was punched today,’” said Fiske.
Fiske said her son had told teachers that he was punched but that nothing came of it. After meeting with the principle of Edgewood Highlands and several teachers the same day, she says nothing was done.
“Their story was that he never alerted them that he was punched; it was more of a playground incident, that he was fine, no big deal.”
Fiske said this isn’t the first time her son has been bullied on school grounds. Last year, she says Ryder was tackled in front of her and a teacher by another child when he set foot on the playground; she alleges no action was taken then either.
Chief Operating Officer of the Cranston Public Schools released a statement to WPRO saying: “The Cranston Public Schools takes the safety of all students and staff very seriously. We have conducted an internal review of this matter, as is set forth by our policy. We believe that all staff conducted themselves in the appropriate manner.”
