In the midst of some of this year’s hottest days, the city of Providence has closed all five of its public pools due to cloudy water.
In a statement from Mayor Jorge Elorza’s office, a spokesman blamed the closures on calcium buildup in the water. Press Secretary Evan England said the increased calcium causes the water to become cloudy and “impede visibility,” something he said makes it more difficult for lifeguards to see the bottom or corners of the pools.
England said the calcium buildup was caused by the heavy rains last week.
While the pool water is being treated, England said the pools at South Side Boys and Girls Club and Pleasant View School will be open to the public at no cost, and the city’s recreation department will be providing transportation to the pools from various locations.
The pools were originally scheduled to be open through Friday; it’s unclear when and if they will re-open for the season.
