PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A Superior Court judge has agreed to allow a former police chief convicted of stealing from a stripper to serve the remainder of his six-month prison term on home confinement.
The Providence Journal reports former North Providence Police Chief John Whiting was released Tuesday and will be electronically monitored at an apartment in North Providence.
Whiting was accused of stealing more than $700 from an exotic dancer and then trying to persuade a Pawtucket police officer take the money to cover it up.
He was convicted of larceny and criminal solicitation in 2012.
Whiting began serving his six-month sentence in June after losing a state Supreme Court appeal. His lawyer previously sought his release on home-confinement due to medical and marital problems that were not introduced at his trial.
