Around 4:30 in the morning, Fall River fire crews responded to reports of a mill fire on Weaver Street.
“As soon as we got here, there was a bunch of smoke coming from the roof,” said District Fire Chief Scott Flannery. He says due to the size of the mill, it was difficult to find a way up there.
The mill is partially abandoned and located across the street from the Fall River Kidney Center.
Flannery said since there were no working sprinklers in the mill, a fire watch was hired and he was able to help crews find a way up to the top.
“There was a fire, we extinguished it, unfortunately it got in the roof and once it got in the roof it became a problem for us,” said Flannery. It took crews about two and a half hours to get the fire under control.
Two firefighters were taken to the hospital after suffering from heat exhaustion. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
