The Cape Cod man who became a local sensation after he pledged to ride his bike from Massachusetts to California in an effort to lose weight will be making his way through Newport over the weekend.
Eric Hites, who started the website titled “Fat Guy Across America,” was delayed a week in Tiverton after the bike he was using broke. Hites had been camping behind a church spreading the word about his trip in the hopes on getting a sponsorship and more importantly a new bike.
Hites told WPRO’s Gene Valicenti he will be riding towards Aquidneck Island starting on Saturday.
“It will take about a week off my trip,” said Hites.
Since the beginning of the trip, Hites has only been making the trip in six to ten mile increments, although he says with the new bike he might do better.
Hites says he’s lost 60 pounds since starting the trip.
