In a small ceremony outside of the Twin River Casino Monday, firefighters handed representatives of the Station Fire Memorial Foundation a check worth $11,600 to put towards construction of the memorial park.
For three weeks in June, the firefighters “passed the boot” at Twin River raising the funds; Deputy Chief Todd Tucker said it was nice change of pace to help a local cause.

“Sometimes you want to do something a little closer to home, and my chief […] said ‘what do you guys think of doing that?’ and we said we’re all in,” said Tucker.
The donation is a part of the effort to raise $2 million to build a lasting memorial as tribute to the 100 people who tragically lost their lives in 2003.
“[The money] will pay for quite a bit of stuff on the property,” said Gina Russo, President of the Memorial Foundation “And to have firefighters involved is an even bigger deal.”
Russo hopes the participation of the Limerock Fire Department will inspire more firefighters to raise money.
Construction of the park is slated to begin on June 25, with the total completion of the park expected in spring of 2016.
