Authorities say an Attleboro man has been arrested in connection with the January hit-and-run death of the assistant town clerk of Seekonk.
Karen McHugh was fatally injured at 10 p.m. on Jan. 30 when she was struck by a car on Arcade Avenue. She died the same night at Rhode Island Hospital.
Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn and Seekonk Police Chief Craig Mace said Sunday afternoon that 24-year-old Jacob LaCourse after his father tipped off police about his son’s car.
“The man had a conscience,” said Seekonk Police Chief Craig Mace.
Officials also say LaCourse’s girlfriend heard him admit he struck McHugh.
LaCourse was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death and negligent operation of a motor vehicle and ordered held on $1 million bail with $10 million in surety as he awaits trial.
He was arrested Friday, and had been free on bail in an unrelated charges of rape. It’s not immediately known if he has an attorney to comment on the new charges.
