COVENTRY, R.I. (AP) – The Coventry Fire District’s board of directors has voted on measures aimed at alleviating some of the struggling district’s financial troubles.
The Providence Journal reports the board voted Tuesday night to sell off items that the district owns, such as generators and possibly the fire chief’s car.
They also voted to publish a list of people who are not current on their taxes.
Board member John D’Onofrio says that the town has about $300,000 in uncollected taxes.
The fire district was unable to fully make its scheduled payroll last week, and still has $900,000 in outstanding bills.
The state Department of Revenue sent a letter to town officials reminding them that they are still responsible for the safety of residents despite the fire district’s financial problems.
