PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The Rhode Island judge overseeing the pension lawsuit settlement between the state and public employees has entered a final judgment on the deal she approved last month.
The Providence Journal reports Superior Court Judge Sarah Taft-Carter filed the order Wednesday. Courts spokesman Craig Berke said parties who intend to appeal have 20 days to file notice with the court. A retired state budget officer already has told the court he intends to appeal the settlement.
Gov. Gina Raimondo approved the settlement as part of the state budget bill she signed last week. The lawsuit challenged a 2011 overhaul of the state pension system that Raimondo oversaw as state treasurer. It cuts some benefits for current retirees.
Municipal police officers and Cranston firefighters are not part of the settlement and continue to challenge the pension overhaul.
