PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – State lawmakers are considering multiple bills that would place restrictions on new charter schools until public education funding in the state is reevaluated.
The House of Representatives on Thursday approved a bill requiring the state education officials to evaluate the financial impact of new charter schools as well as existing ones that want to expand.
The House Committee on Health, Education and Welfare is considering a separate bill that would impose a one-year moratorium on the establishment of new charter schools.
The Senate Education Committee on Wednesday passed a bill calling for city approval of new charter schools and the expansion of existing charters.
Bills in both legislative chambers need to match in order for legislation to pass.
A recent report by a House commission determined funding across public schools was not equitable.
