The former Old Warwick League Library in Warwick Neck is up for sale, but you don’t have to know the Dewey Decimal System to buy it.
Kim Davis, a realtor with Keller Williams Realty, said the former library became a private home in the 1970’s.
“The home was originally built in 1883,” she said. “They used it originally as an intellectual gentleman’s club.”
She said the building then became a library, then a schoolhouse, and then a library again.
“There are people that live in that area that remember coming to [the library] when they were in school to check out books,” she said.
Some of those books might still be there – Davis said there are books inside the home that date back to the 1880’s.
“It’s one of those places you walk in and it takes your breath away,” said Davis, who said there are plenty of bookshelves, 15-foot ceilings, original woodwork and a spiral staircase.
The librarian’s original desk is still inside the home, as well as the log she used to check out books.
The current residents have lived there for five years and have made extensive changes to both the indoor and outdoor spaces, but Davis said they also stayed true to the original style.
The three-bedroom, 1.5 bath, 3,300 square-foot home is listed for $309,000 and Davis says the sale is pending.
