The Department of Health is monitoring more than a dozen children who attend a Warren daycare after a child died from a bacterial infection.
A spokeswoman for HEALTH said the 13-month-old child died Tuesday morning from symptoms resembling a meningococcal bacterial infection.
HEALTH identified 13 children that the victim had close contact with from two classrooms at the Children’s Workshop daycare center in Warren. The parents were notified and the children are now being treated with preventative antibiotics.
HEALTH said there is no threat to any other children at the Children’s Workshop and the daycare is operating normally.
The director of HEALTH, Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, visited the Children’s Workshop Wednesday morning to address the child’s death and to answer questions from parents.
Meningococcal bacteria can lead to meningitis, a swelling of the membranes that protect the brain and spinal cord. The bacteria are transmitted through saliva and throat secretions.
