BRISTOL, R.I. (AP) – A Rhode Island police officer who went missing off the coast of Costa Rica is dead.
Richard Jean-Georges was found dead Tuesday afternoon hours after a team of Bristol police officers arrived to help search for him.
Relatives of Jean-Georges told WJAR-TV he had been swimming with his younger brother near a beach in the resort city of Jacó when both were carried out to sea by the current. His brother was rescued.
A GoFundMe account has been set up in Jean-Georges’ honor.
Jeff Dunsavage, of the Missing Americans Project, says he believes Jean-Georges is the second American and 10th person to drown in the country this month.
