PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A state Senate committee is considering whether to approve the settlement terms for a deal that would resolve years of legal wrangling over Rhode Island’s landmark public pension system overhaul.
The Senate Finance Committee met for a rare Monday hearing. The General Assembly typically meets Tuesday through Thursday.
Senate staff expected a lengthy public testimony portion but only eight people signed up to testify, with one in opposition. Several were involved in negotiating the settlement, including lawyers for both sides.
Treasurer Seth Magaziner urged the committee to support the carefully-crafted deal so the state can move forward.
A judicial system employee, Elizabeth Del Padre, says she’s opposing it because employees eligible to retire by years of service and employees eligible to retire by age are treated differently.
