PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) – The owners of the Pawtucket Red Sox say it would cost at least $65 million to renovate McCoy Stadium to catch up with other Triple-A ballparks.
But city officials call the estimate for the International League’s oldest stadium “extraordinarily high.”
Members of Mayor Donald Grebien’s staff tell The Providence Journal it’s difficult to evaluate the estimate because the team’s owners have not made public the feasibility study that produced the figure. City officials say it’s hard to know whether the figures are reasonable or if the recommended upgrades are practical.
Meanwhile, the team’s principal owner, James Skeffington, died Sunday evening, leading to questions about the next step for the team.
The ownership group has proposed building a state-of-the-art facility for the PawSox in downtown Providence.
