EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Police say they were aware of the threat posed by an East Providence man before he allegedly stabbed Christine Santurri to death in front of her daughter on Mother’s Day.
Officers searched for Yuland Stanfield after he made threatening comments to Santurri shortly before she was killed.
Chief Christopher Parella says the 43-year-old Stanfield had been staying in homeless shelters and wasn’t at his last known address. Parella says if Stanfield had been found, he would have been arrested.
Stanfield was already on probation for a number of charges.
Stanfield sobbed and collapsed at his arraignment Monday on charges including first-degree murder. He was held without bail.
The suspect’s daughter expressed sympathy for the victim’s family outside of court.
