It may sound weird at first: Providence business seeking resident hawk to curb pigeon problem; but that’s exactly what the management at the Westminster Lofts are trying to do.
EcoRI reports management has installed a specialized bird house to attract a kestrel hawk to nest and eliminate the resident pigeon population and keep them from defecating on the property. Having a natural predator would force the birds to move elsewhere without resorting to methods such as poisoning.
The pigeon nests are protected by the Loft’s ornamental lighting.
The kestrel hawk is a small member of the falcon family which feeds on other small birds and raids nests for eggs. The kestrel is indigenous to North America and is found in both cities and farm country.
