An elderly man is dead after a fire broke out at a multi-family residence on Logee Street early Tuesday morning.
The fire started just after 5:30am and took several hours to knock down.
“Upon our arrival, we found heavy fire in front of the building,” said Woonsocket Fire Chief Paul Chatraw “People were actually evacuating out of a rear fire escape.”
The fire claimed the life of one victim; the nephew of the elderly man says he died because he went back inside the burning home to find his wife; the woman was able to make it out alive.
WPRI reports a cat and dog were also rescued and taken to the East Greenwich Animal Hospital for treatment.
The home was completely gutted in the blaze, officials are investigating what caused the fire.
