In their initial pitch to the Tiverton town council, Twin River Management claimed a relocated and expanded Newport Grand casino would bring millions of dollars in revenue and create hundreds of jobs for the town.
In a brief presentation to the town council, TRMG Chairman John Taylor reiterated the company’s plan to build a new gaming facility on a 45-acre plot of land in north Tiverton approximately 400 feet away from the Fall River Massachusetts border. Taylor said the relocation would generate $400 million in tax revenue and bring between 350-400 jobs to the town, 100 of which would be security related. Additionally, 160 jobs from Newport would also be retained.
Newport Grand currently generates $30 million in revenue for the state, and Taylor believes the location in Tiverton would be able to accommodate around 1,100 slot machines and 30 table games.
The meeting Monday night was not open to public comment; instead TRMG intends to have between 40 and 50 smaller meetings with residents to address concerns about the project; Taylor stated during the meeting his company is not planning to build a $500 million casino.
The final proposal is set to be discussed over the course of three meetings scheduled for September.
