Two weeks after announcing they would be checking the guest list of the crime-plagued Motel 6 on Jefferson Boulevard, Warwick Police Colonel Stephen McCartney says the force is ending the practice.
“I felt it was in the best interest of everybody that they discontinue the practice of faxing the guest list over to us,” said McCartney.
The practice of faxing the guest list came after the city and Motel 6 executives met over the rash of crime emanating from their corporate-owned location. The ACLU quickly objected to the measure, saying guest’s privacy rights were being violated.
“I was getting more uncomfortable with the fact that the data being sent to the Police Department could potentially open up other avenues of controversy; particularly on the open records side that I felt we could avoid,” said McCartney.
WJAR reports the practice was only in place about a week.
