A police bomb squad was called to the site of a laundry fire on York Avenue in Pawtucket after what appeared to be a grenade was found inside.
Fire crews quickly put out a small dryer fire at the industrial laundry service but called for the bomb squad as a precaution when they spotted the grenade, since they didn’t know if it was active or fake.
“We’re following our standard operating procedures,” said Pawtucket Fire Marshal Robert Thurber “Once we find a device we back away and go on from there.”
“It could be a paper weight,” continued Thurber. Turns out it was. The bomb squad determined the grenade was a novelty item.
The building was vacant at the time of the fire and no one was hurt.
