Over a hundred Rhode Islanders gathered at the Saints Sahag and Mesrob Armenian Church in Providence to remember the lives lost in the Armenian genocide one hundred years ago.
“It’s been a long 100 years,” said Armenian Martyrs’ Memorial Committee member Steven Zaroogian.
“We pay tribute every year, but the centennial is a special day as we commemorate the genocide.”
Zaroogian said he is disappointed the United States has still not recognized the slaughter of over one million Armenians in 1915 as genocide; despite President Barack Obama promising to do so. He says the distinction is necessary to learn from history.
“You take a look at what took place with the holocaust; you take a look at what is taking place today with ISIS, with the Muslims persecuting Christians, it’s a repeat of what took place starting in 1915.”
The church will be closed Sunday to encourage members to travel to New York City for a special service in Times Square.
