Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea announced new proposals to modernize what she calls Rhode Island’s “antiquated voting laws.”
The pair of House and Senate bills makes up what the State Department titled the Voting and Elections Modernization Act of 2015; legislation which proposes moving the process of registering to vote online. The measure is intended to increase voter participation by making it easier for people to register and edit there existing information.
“Using everyday technology we can better accommodate the work and family responsibilities of modern society,” said Gorbea in a statement.
The bill would also enable Rhode Island to join Electronic Registration Information Center, a multi-state voter database that would help cut down on voter fraud by cross-referencing names and cleaning up the voter rolls. The legislation also extends early voting.
The bills are sponsored by Representative Aaron Regunberg and State Senator Erin Lynch.
