PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The new owners of the Pawtucket Red Sox want to build the team’s new ballpark on a 4.8-acre plot of land along the Providence River, but a tunnel for transporting sewage and rainwater may be in their way.

The Providence Journal reports that one of seven “drop shafts” in the Narragansett Bay Commission’s combined-sewer overflow system is underneath the land.

Commission spokeswoman Jamie Samons says the tunnels collect and then transport sewage and rainwater underground so it can be treated before being discharged.

The commission is consulting engineers about whether the drop shaft underneath the land would need to be moved.

The commission and the PawSox president say they don’t know how much it would cost to do so.

It has been in its current location since 2008.
