Freshman State Senator Elaine Morgan (R, Charlestown) is requesting the state Department of Transportation and Commerce Secretary Stefan Pryor to consider reopening the dormant I-95 Welcome Center in Richmond.
“I would like to see a Welcome Center that says ‘Welcome to Rhode Island,’” Morgan told the WPRO Morning News with Gene Valicenti.
Morgan and other members of the Republican caucus say they are willing to work with the DOT to open the center is the most cost efficient way possible.
Morgan says having a visibly dormant welcome center off of I-95 gives travelers a bad first impression of the state; Morgan believes the center should give tourists a small taste of little Rhody.
“Samples of our coffee milk, clam chowder, calamari; something like that.”
The welcome center has been shut down for the past four years.
