Police cordoned off an area of Smith Street in Providence after a RIPTA bus struck a young girl Thursday morning.
The accident occurred around 8:30am when the young girl crossed the street with her father while on the way to school. Police confirmed the nine-year old girl died from her injuries after she was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital for treatment.
Commissioner of Public Safety Steven Pare says it’s too early in the investigation to determine exactly what happened.
“We’re looking at videos that may indicate what happened leading up to this fatal crash,” said Pare.
CEO of RIPTA Raymond Studley said the driver is a 16-year veteran with an excellent driving record. He said the death of girl has deeply affected everyone who works at RIPTA.
“When a young child loses his or her life it horrible, it’s tragic, and it’s painful for us,” said Studley.
The driver has been placed on administrative leave following the accident; no criminal charges have been filed.
