PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Construction has again been delayed for a pedestrian bridge linking downtown Providence with the College Hill and Fox Point neighborhoods.
The Providence Journal reports that Providence planning director Bonnie Nickerson says the bridge over the Providence River is on hold temporarily because new Pawtucket Red Sox owners hope to leave Pawtucket’s McCoy Stadium and build a new ballpark at the western end of the bridge.
They want to build on former highway land now set aside to become a city park.
But the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, which is financing the $5.5 million project, says the delay has nothing to do with a potential stadium. Supervising civil engineer Lambri Zerva said it’s because of the amount of technical work required for what he calls a “very, very complicated bridge.”
