Governor Gina Raimondo, Speaker Nicholas Mattiello, and Senate President Teresa Paiva-Weed announced the appointment of thirteen members to a new climate change advisory board.
The Rhode Island Executive Climate Change Coordinating Council Advisory Board is the result of a bill signed by then-Governor Lincoln Chafee last summer and tasks its members with mitigating climate change in Rhode Island.
The board’s duties will include overseeing climate friendly policies throughout state agencies and evaluating climate chane’s effects on the state’s ecosystem. Additionally, the board will also be preparing a report due in December of 2016 on strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions below 1990 levels.
“Climate change is not only an environmental issue – it impacts public health and the economic strength of our communities,” Raimondo said in a statement.
“The Rhode Island Executive Climate Change Coordinating Council Advisory Board will use its collective strength and expertise to develop practical solutions to address climate change and adapt to its impact. I am grateful to these individuals for their promise to dedicate their time and knowledge to help protect our state’s important resources.”
The thirteen members are comprised of directors of various state and municipal agencies.
