Officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms have joined Providence Public Safety in their investigation into what caused the fire in the vacant factory building on Kinsley.
Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare says 21 ATF agents have been brought in to help assist the investigation.
ATF agent Jeffery Mills said their job is to just bring additional resources.
“This is all preliminary; we just got on the ground today, and we will be here throughout the week,” said Mills.
While there is no indication the fire was caused by foul play, investigators are treating the fire as suspicious per protocol.
“We approach these things as they are suspicious until we rule out any other causes,” said Pare.
The fire started early Tuesday morning and reaching five alarms; thick black smoke could be seen for miles and led to the Department of Environmental Management issuing an air quality safety alert.
