PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The House Judiciary Committee is again considering legislation that would ban the publishing of explicit images of someone without their consent.
A spokesman for the House speaker said Tuesday that the bill has a good chance of passing. The bill has passed the committee but was later stalled.
Attorney General Peter Kilmartin’s office says he filed the legislation to criminalize the practice known as “revenge porn.” His office says he has filed similar legislation for the past four years.
Kilmartin’s office says the legislation would make it a felony to post sexually explicit photos of someone without their consent when the person had a “reasonable expectation of privacy.”
Doing so would be punishable by up to three years in prison or a fine of no more than $3,000 or both.
