The National Weather Service in Boston says this year’s February is the third coldest on record

The NWSB says the average temperature this month has been 19.8 degrees Fahrenheit; only a tenth of a degree higher than 1979 and less than two degrees warmer than the record of 17.4 in the winter of 1934.

The combination of snow and cold has pummeled the New England area, with Boston faring the worst with a snow total of over seven feet across the three winter snow storms. This is also the second coldest winter on record for Boston.

Because of the ice and snow, RIPTA announced on Monday it would be detouring eight bus routes and warns riders to expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

A wind chill warning was still in effect Monday morning.
