PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – One of five people arrested after police say they blocked Interstate 95 in Providence during a protest in November has appealed a guilty finding and probation sentence.
The state Attorney General’s Office says Tess Brown-Lavoie of Providence was found guilty of disorderly conduct Thursday after a trial before Judge Christine Jabour in Providence District Court. Jabour imposed a sentence of six months of probation, a $500 fine and 100 hours of community service.
An appeal filed by Brown-Lavoie is expected to send the case before a Superior Court jury.
Demonstrators blocked the highway while protesting a grand jury’s decision not to indict a white police officer in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri.
Another protester was sentenced to community service and three others await trial.
