The Providence Ethics Commission will have its first appointees since its creation nine years ago. Mayor Jorge Elorza appointed three members to the commission Wednesday afternoon in an effort to fulfill his campaign promise of making City Hall more transparent.

“No commissioners have been appointed since [2006] and the commission has never met; it’s about time that we change that,” said Elorza.

Elorza nominated Elsa Dure, Ethan Gyles and Zack Mezera to serve on the commission. The members will be tasked with investigating violations of the city’s ethics code.

The Mayor stressed during his campaign that a functional ethics commission is necessary to revitalize the city’s image as a place to do business. Elorza said the announcement of the appointees wouldn’t have been possible without the cooperation of the City Council.

“We wouldn’t be here today were it not for the partnership of the City Council, and it’s only through this partnership that we were able to fully empanel under the ordinance,” said Elorza.

The commission will also be producing an accessible guide to the Providence City Code.
